Remakes aren't that bad...no, really.

People tend to get bent out of shape when they hear something they loved, or something that was fairly good the first time 'round, is being redone. I should know, I am one of the more boisterous ones about this subject on the Horror-web. I have a different outlook on remakes.

I look at it like this, they redo plays all the time and people line up to see them. Why? Because there's a new cast, and maybe some small changes. If something is good, why not redo it with more money or better talent, and create something new? People don't throw fits of rage because 'Grease' is coming back to Broadway or 'Phantom' has been redone so many times with different casts.

Why should we flip out over movies being redone? I, for one, enjoyed seeing 'Pyscho' remade back in the '90's. Where the problem lies is with the people making the new version. I mean, the new TCM wasn't that bad at all. A new cast, a new spin, a few little changes, but the heart and soul of the original was there. Same thing with Dawn of the Dead (minus the whole running zombies thing). If it's done well, a film should be remade for a new generation to explore and discover. I personally have a list of movies I would love to see remade, because there is great talent and more money out there.

The issue with the horror remakes is that most of the time they're being done so badly and it's leaving a bad taste in the mouth of horror fans. There's a string of remakes coming - God help us - including some of Wes Craven's early works being retooled, which might not be a bad thing. A little more money, some better talent and as long as it's not watered down to be family friendly...

My thoughts on remakes is that they are not all bad. I enjoy seeing things brought back to life and resurged with a renewed interest in the Material. That's my thoughts and I'm sticking to them....

However, and I swear to this on my life, If Halloween is remade - if they insult the entire horror community by redoing the film that started everything - I shall retire from Horror-web and the entire Horror genre. I will not watch another horror film as long as I live. And that is a promise, dear friends. YOU DON'T "F" WITH HALLOWEEN!
