So months of reports have lead up to the DVD release of Hostel--the sicker more twisted edition. I'd seen some pictures in Fango, of some really awesome gore, when they previewed Hostel a few issues ago...I noticed right away that they were not from the movie we saw in the theatre. So yay--an unrated DVD that is going to whoop some serious ass! And so thus began the countdown to April 18th and the DVD release...
And what the hell did I find when I put the "sicker more twisted version" in my DVD player? I'll tell you what. It was nearly the same freakin thing I saw in the theatre. I did not see anything there that I didn't remember seeing in the theatre. Maybe a few shots lingered a little longer, but there was nothing to dare claim it was sicker and more twisted. There was nothing there that had me, jaw dropped on the floor, saying "Damn!" Nothing that made me cheer in delight, nothing that had me saying "Yep, that's unrated!"
So I'm throwing a big W-T-F out there. Where's this "sicker and more twisted version" hiding out at? Cause it sure wasn't it in my DVD player. I'm so over this fad of let's call everything unrated so we can sell more copies. Unrated, Director's cut, UNedited and UNcensored used to mean something. It used to mean you were going to see something shocking, or see a new version of a movie you already loved. But those days are gone. Now it's let's add one minute of footage no one will notice and slap 'Unrated!' on the cover. Dark Water, Exorcism of Emily Rose, Cry_Wolf, and who knows what new releases will slander the good horror genre by boasting an "Unrated" title--when it really should be called "The Unnecessary Edition".
It's just another thing to bring the horror genre down, like making movies Pg13. I'm tired of being tricked with their shenanigans, and being let down. I get enough of that with the poor horror films that seem to be coming out these days as it is.
