Does anyone like Japanese Horror? If so, what are your favorites?

I like them, to a certain extent. It seems more so than not, I become disappointed with the same theme over and over again.

I'm currently enjoying the DeathNote movies (adapted from the manga of the same name). It's not the same old Ring/Grudge crap.

Audition was the first one that came to mind.
I alsoi had a chnce to watch Za Ginipiggu (Guinea Pig series) and found it an interesting watch. While it was corny and looked fake as heck, it did have a certain strange appeal that made you watch. scary mary Do not fear the darkness, but rather that which the darkness hides!

I lurrrrve Japanahorror!!! It's just that you can't get it very easily out here in the boonies.
I liked the original Ringu and Ju-On, didn't care as much for the remakes. Loved Audition, and I really liked a little film called Dark Angel Ezo Eko Azarak...or something like that. Can't seem to find that one anymore. "Normal is relative and your nightmares are real."

Japanese horror favorites are varied. Tetsuo and Audition are at the top of my list though. I must say I prefer movies like Versus and Death Trance. They blend the supernatural elements with more action.

My wife was telling me about one that I didn't get a chance to see. Something about a blind woman who gets an eye transplant... The eyes make her see, but she starts seeing some really weird stuff...
Sound familiar to anyone? |

Tale of Two Sisters was very good, but I do believe that is a Korean film.
Koma was decent, a few twists and turns. And if you ever had a bad feeling about the teen groups out there in the music world, you should watch Suicide Club....gives a whole new meaning to those crazy groups! ---

The Eye rocked, but I'm pretty sure it was Korean. Also loved Battle Royale, not sure if that counts as horror...

I loved AUDITION, The Japanese version of DARK WATER was good, the American remake sucked. I like their subtle vision of horror more than the super SFX done in America.
Anyone seen the Korean flick The Host? I think it is a monster movie, and presumably a good one.. I didn't see a review from Jekyll or Hyde... and I need one so I can decide if I should watch it or not! Abs |

I have seen a few Japanese horror, the most recent was "One Missed Call". "Spiral" was a bit odd but enjoyable. "Dragonmount" wasn't exactly horror, more of a apocalyptic sci-fi with horror elements mixed in. The aftermath of a Japanese bullet train going from 100+ to zero in a couple seconds is not easilly forgotten. While I do have it, I have yet to see it, probably this weekend, I also have "One Missed Call 2" as well. I have heard rumors they plan to make American versions of these two films along the lines of of "Ringu" etc.

Re: Japanese Horror Movies | ||

I think I've seen One Missed Call too.
Was it pretty cheesy? I watched an Asian version of The Twilight Zone or Tales Fromt he Crypt which was HILARIOUS. A host would come out and set up each story and then come back after the tale to let us in on the moral lesson that the character's learned -- you know, very Rod Serling-like. But the funny thing was, the English translations made absolutely no sense. The story would be about a boy who dumps girls off in the woods and eventually their ghosts come back for revenge. Then the host comes on and says something like: "Remember, kids, you may climb all the trees in all the world but you can only make lemonaide by swimming close to shore!" And then he'd stare meaningfully into the camera and the credits would roll. Damn, I wish I could remember what that was called. |
