It was interesting to have a conversation about this with the friends whom I watched the movie with. They had not read the book, I had.
The convo was mainly about why the kid didn't say anything. What kind of person does it take to not say anything, why was the kid so scared, etc? It
didn't really seem to come through in the movie, so you are just sitting saying what a pathetic kid for not saying anything. In the book though it seemed
to make a bit more sense somehow.

See, if that kid was real, he wouldn't have told the cops: Ruth has a girl captive in the basement that she's torturing, he would have told them: Ruth
is hiding communists in her basement. That would have got results. BTW, I can't remember if her name was Ruth or not, I just dinnae want to call her
"that nuts lady".

i think that makes it creepier--as it did in the book. the way we look away from what our neighbors may or may not be doing. the way the always say, "he
was such a nice, polite boy"... yeah--who was butchering people in the garage!!

if memory serves, the original article that it was based on was mid-60s and Ketchum moved it to late 50s...

You know, I wanted to like that movie, but the suspension of disbelief was so bloody slaughtered that I just couldn't buy it, especially in the
paranoia-laden 50's. No way in hell that woman would have got away with those shenanigens.

Other than that, I rather enjoyed it. [Please note sarcasm.] ;)
